The Flying Finnish Fitness Beauty: Minna Pajulahti

mpMinna Pajulahti Photo Gallery

Minna Pajulahti is a 25 year old fitness competitor from Finland. She has been competing in fitness for five years and is hooked on the sport in and out. Or what do you think – how many flight attendants do you see living such organized live that competing in fitness demands? When she’s not flying around the world, she also works as an aerobics instructor. Another dear hobby of hers is cheer dance, which includes jumps, pirouettes and dance moves. She competes at national and international level in a team called Dream Team Dancers.

mp1Minna lives in a small town called Nokia with her two dogs. She likes to be around people and her family and says,  “I have two brothers and two sisters. Two of them are younger than I and two are older, so I am the one in the middle. My family is very big part of my life so it is nice that also my mother and father live near me. I have met many of my good friends while doing sports and I mainly see them in practice or in the gym.  My family and friends have been a great support during these years that I have been competing.”

At the age of seven Minna started gymnastics and before that she had taken ballet-lessons and done ice-skating, but didn’t find them amusing enough. She ended up  competing in gymnastics for almost ten years. Minna’s’s team was a part of the National Gymnastics team. At the age of 14 she found an advertisement about cheerleading and got interested about it. During the years 2005 and 2006 her team, Dream Team Dancers, has won the Finnish Championships in the dance category. They also placed second in last year’s World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Way to go! Minna says, “Gymnastics and cheerleading have been a great background for fitness training. It is fun that I can train dance moves and jumps with ten other women with my cheer dance team and then do weight training on my own.“mp2

Minna’s fitness oriented life started early and when she competed in 2000, she was only 20 years old. “I started weight training when I was 19 years old, after I had quit gymnastics.  I wanted still to compete and practice routines and I had always admired muscular bodies so fitness was a good choice for me. I found a coach and we decided that I would do my first competition in the year 2000, after I had trained one year. The first competition was exciting and I learned much about my body and nutrition. All and all it was a great experience and then I knew that I was going to do this for a long time.”

Her next competition was very successful and she won the Finnish Championships in the juniors category in 2001. She also got the opportunity to compete in Amateurs World Championships in Alicante Spain in the end of the year 2001. There she placed second. “It was the greatest moment in my fitness career so far!” It sure was, and it was a honor to Finnish Fitness as a whole. After that competition she took a break and concentrated to train since next time she would have to compete in the open class with rising Finnish fitness stars, like Marjo Krishi.

After her success in Spain everything didn’t go as planned. “My next competition was not so successful. My diet was too short and my body did not function the same way as it did before.  I only managed to get to the final rounds.  At first I was very disappointed, but after a few days I was back at the gym training again. I think that you can learn something from every competition you go to, and you just have to think how to turn your lost into victory. This is sport in which you can not always succeed and do your best, but when you do it tastes even sweeter. Fitness has given me many great moments and friends and also tears and sweat, but I have enjoyed every moment that it has given me.”

I asked Minna to describe a typical day of her life. Her job and dance workouts make it an interesting combination of careful time management and planning:

“My life is nowadays very irregular because my job as a flight attendant. Sometimes my workday starts at 03.30 am and ends at 16.00 pm and sometimes I work from 12.00 am till 01.30 pm, so my days are very long, and every day is different.  I also fly long-distance flights to Asia and USA so I spend a few days in a month aboard.

But if I have a free day it starts about 8-9 am by taking the dogs out. Then I either make a breakfast or go and do my cardio. In the summer I like to tan so if it is a good weather I do it if I have time. In the afternoon I go to the food store and buy things that I need for my next work trip.  At 5pm I usually go to the gym and three times a week I go to my cheer practice at 8pm. I instruct aerobics classes about 2 times a week, so some days they are part of my daily schedule. In the evening I relax by going to the sauna and watching movies. Usually I pack my bags ready for the next work day and prepare the foods I am going to need and put them in a cooler.

If I am aboard I usually do my cardio just walking around the city and seeing sightseeing and of course shopping! It is actually great to have the opportunity to train in a different environments, it gives more motivation to my training. But of course it is hard to plan every day as its own. Especially the nutrition requires more planning when you are always on the go. I also have to pay attention for the time difference and how it will affect to my body and training.”

What is your training split like? How often you do cardio?

I try to train with weights five times a week, and the days depend on my work. I keep two or three hard weeks and one light week in my training.  This is an example of my training.
1. Back and biceps
2. Shoulders and traps
3. chest and triceps
4. legs
5. biceps

I do 6 to 12 reps, and 3 sets. I use forced reps and trop sets in my training.

In off-season I do extra cardio when I have time for it, I practice three times a week our teams dance routines and then I keep those couple of cardio lessons. When I am on a diet I try to do my morning cardio as often as possible, because that really works me the best. I also like to vary my cardio when I am on a diet and one time a week I run stairs, do jumps, play tennis and go water running.

This year has been a different year for Minna when it comes to training and eating. Minna I broke her knee’s ACL in January so everything turned upside down in a blink of an eye.

“I was doing my cheer dance routine in January and I did a toe touch jump which ended in a split. I guess I hadn’t warmed up enough and suddenly I felt pain in my knee. In a moment, after ice and keeping it towards the sky, it felt better and I was sure that I’d be able to go to the practice next day, because our national competition was just one week ahead.  In the morning I could not walk and the pain was worse so I went to see a doctor. The conclusion was that my left knee’s ACL was totally torn. My knee was operated in February and I couldn’t go to work in three months after that. The first month was really tough because I had to walk with crutches. After that I have re-learned how to walk. I still have to be very careful before doing any hard training for that leg.”

Minna has had to change her attitude towards competing and health as a whole: “This year has been very hard and different for me. The injury changed my competition plans and also affected my training. Now the knee has recovered quite well and I am really excited to be able for example run again. The injury really stopped me and I learned to appreciate more my health.”

Her cardio has changed the most since she still has to be careful and take it easy. Minna’s diet has changed this year also because of her injury.  She eats clean food, mostly protein like egg whites, chicken breast, protein shakes for five days a week and then gives herself little cheats here and there for two days. When Minna begins her diet, she drops out the free food days and also makes some changes to daily meals to keep her metabolism working. When the diet begins, she will also add more cardio into her regime.

So when will we see this beautiful competitor to perform on stage again? Minna reveals her plans for her near future: “My next competition season in fitness is going to be next year. My goal is to compete in cheer dance in February and probably in fitness in the fall in Finnish Nationals, depending how my knee has recovered. I just can not wait to be in stage again, now after a long pause I am really looking forward to compete again!”mp3

Look for her to make some noise this weekend and don’t be surprised if you see her competing on the Olympia stage. She has a fun personality and a killer set of arms. Read about her work out split, cooking dos and don’ts and why she’s a bad driver, even in her own drive way.

Name: Jodi Boam

Born in:Hamilton Ontario Canada

Number of years competing in gymnastics: 11 competitive years!

What level did you make it to? I was a national level gymnast by age 15, and qualified to compete at the World Championships, but unfortunately had to pull out the week of, due to injury!

How’s your injury from the gymnastic days doing? My old injuries don’t bother me too often, only because I do know my limits and which exercises to avoid. Currently, My elbows are my main issue, where some days I cannot do my routine or train arms as any pressure causes sharp pains. But no, there’s nothing too crazy to worry or stop me.

How did you get started in competitive fitness? Once I retired from gymnastics, I started weight training to stay in shape – where my best friend Rachel Davis introduced me to the world of Fitness through Mindi O’Brien. I loved weight training, was a great gymnast, have a very competitive personality and have a need to perform! it just fits me so perfectly, so both Rachel and Mindi both inspired to be where I am today!!

How’s it feel to compete with Mindi on the same stage? it actually feels like a dream!! She was my idol for years, and my coach and mentor since I started competing!! I wouldn’t even be at this level without Mindi O! To be on stage with my coach is seriously a dream – but definitely SOO terrifying lol. It makes me realize I AM in the “big league” and fighting for the top against the best out there!

Contest history:
Had my first fitness victory in 2007, where I instantly got hooked!
2011 IFFB PRO DEBUT – 5th in New York
2010 CBBF Canadian Nationals, 1st place Women’s Fitness Short and Overall Fitness Winner
2009 CBBF Canadian Nationals, 3rd place Women’s Fitness Short and Best Routine Award
2008 OPA Championships (Level 3), 1st place Fitness
2008 CBBF Canadian Nationals, 5th place Women’s Fitness Short
2007 CBBF Nationals World Qualifier, 1st place Women Fitness Short
2007 OPA National Qualifier (Natural Ontario’s) (Level 1), 1st place Fitness
2007 OPA Northern Ontario Championships (Level 2), 1st place Fitness

I understand you’re “Canada’s youngest pro” – How old or young are you?I turned 24 in March, but Earned my pro card August 2010 at Age 23! Unfortunately I am no longer thee youngest, but currently still the youngest in Canada to obtain it. Crystal Heck now holds that title earning her pro card recently at age 24, being just a few weeks younger than me.

What’s the most challenging part of preparing for fitness? Dealing with the bumps and bruises from practicing on the hardwood floor! After having bouncy mats for so many years, I often forget certain skills should not be done on wood, lol. Especially a plain old front roll! I’m sure all fitness ladies agree

Who inspires you in the fitness industry?Mindi O’Brien was my first inspiration, who helped get me where I am today! Over the years, I’ve also gained huge respect and admiration for Oksana Grishina. She’s amazing and beautiful and all aspects and I’m looking forward to meeting her, and watching get a well deserved WIN!You have some pretty wicked strength. What your workouts consist of? It often changes, but here is a basic Idea I’ve been recently following.

Monday: Chest
Tuesday: Legs
Wednesday: Shoulders/back
Thursday: plyo, cardio, routine
Friday: Biceps/triceps
Saturday: Hamstrings/shoulders
Sunday: off

Do you do cardio on an empty stomach? Yes! I actually really enjoy it (now that I have a treadmill at home…) I do 30-45 minutes fasted cardio, Which I find completely wakes me up, and energizes me for the day! I actually feel lost without it, and not as motivated through the day when I skip my morning cardio! Of course some days off is great too. ( this is mainly for comp. prep only… where off-season I may only do this 2-3 times a week rather than 5-6 times a week)

What type of cardio do you prefer to do? Intervals! Honestly, anything that really kick my butt! I will do sprinting intervals, plyo circuits, or running on the step-mill intervals. I enjoy that complete failure feeling – I know I’m pushing my limits every time!

What types of exercises do you do to help with your flexibility?Active stretching. Warm up with high kicks, or long stride lunges, etc. and also coaching gymnastics I will stretch with the kids or do demonstrations and such.

How many hours a day do you practice your routine or work on your gymnastics? Well… it should be A LOT more than I do… routine is only once a week with my plyo days. Sometimes I will practice random skills after my nightly cardio, or try a couple skills at gymnastics while I’m coaching… but I actually wish I could do it more often. I am finding everything becoming more difficult over the last while, so training “gymnastics” more often IS a goal for me!

I saw a video where it looks like you and your friend Rachel like to be a couple of dorks in the gym. Are you the queen dork or you still working on that title? Between the 2 of us, I don’t even think Napolian Dynamite could top us. Sometimes even I wonder about our sanity lol. But if we choose the Queen geek between rachel and myself – Ill be proud to take the title – even if she wants it!! haha.

What can the audience expect to see on stage? Still being a rookie Pro, My main goal is to catch the judges and audiences attention, and make my name more well known! I want to be remember for upcoming shows, and for many years to come!

Are you excited about the routines being 2/3 of the total score? I am proud of the physique I bring the stage, but yes, I’m very excited about routine being a highly score!! I normally perform pretty well, and bring a jam packed, energetic routine! I just hope the judges agree as well!

How many meals do you eat a day? 6

Favorite diet meal? ground beef with Yams – mixed with franks red hot sauce and tex mex spice!

What’s on the menu. Let me guess – Chicken and Asparagus? lol, not always. At the moment yes, only because I’m few days away from the show, so its very limited and strict! But I have many different meals throughout the course of my prep, my favorites being ground beef with yams, and my egg white and oatmeal pancake. Oh ya, and my protein shake with avocado and raspberries is amazing too!! MMMMM

What cooking experiment would you tell other women NOT to do?Well.. I did try cooking oatmeal and raspberries together – and then pan fry it to make a “cookie” but of course it didn’t turn out too great, and I think I had to throw that frying pan away!! Oh ya… and tried a tuna and asparagus egg white omelet! the 3 DO NOT mix well! Vomitorium! lol

Any cooking experiment that worked out and you’re proud to share with others?Blended vanilla protein powder with peanut butter… poured over cooked oatmeal! Just use small amounts of water so its thick and pasty! YUM!

Are you a bad driver or is the banged up car other people’s fault? lol, Oh God haha… I am a TERRIBLE driver! I admit… I’ve been in about 8 accidents, 7 MY FAULT! and 6 being me hitting PARKED CARS!! – and ya, I hit a parked car in a driveway THE DAY I bought it! .. needless to say, I’m on my 3rd car in 5 years! lol… BUT thank god nothing has been through insurance and my payments are still low!! LMAO

For those of us in the USA, what is “Bulk Barn”? They have everything from dog food, to candy, to baking powder! Where you can take as much or as little as you need, and just pay per unit price!! Its actually amazing! Especially for the gummy bears, chocolate almonds, and Reeces Pieces! lol.

Do you get pissed at McDonald’s workers often? lmao – don’t make me look bad!! But this women seriously got my coffee wrong BOTH times I went! I know it was FREE coffee… but still! McDUMMIES!! haha kidding

What will you be eating for your “first supper” – the first thing after your show?A cheeseburger is my go to!! every time – with fries, tons of ketchup, and a hot brownie with ice-cream for dessert! It never fails!!

When you’re not preparing for a show what would you be doing?I’m always training!! I absolutely love weight training! being at the gym is my happy place, and my time for myself. But if I’m not competing, then I will spend more time focusing on building my business and working more hours to safe for the business! I am currently starting online training for athletes and competitors and working a facility with my boyfriend to personally train them as well!

How long have you been coaching and how often do you coach? I started coaching gymnastics when I was 14 years old, and been going strong ever since. I normally coach about 3-4 times a week, having the 7-13 year old competitive program. Must admit, its a sweet job, especially to keep myself practicing and motivated, and remaining a great role model for the kids! Its a win-win job!

Any supplements that you use and would recommend to other women?Isolate protein, Agent M, Sub-Q, Fubar, L-carnatine, glutamend, vitamins, fish oils, pre-workout drinks (many kinds)! This is about everything I take, and fund great results from each!

What’s the key to recovery from the hard workouts and training? Good sleep, proper stretching, stay active afterwards – don’t just laze around to get stiff!!

What songs are you jamming to lately? David Guetta – anything from him!! Rihanna, Bon Jovi, and JUSTIN BIEBER!! haha seriously, I love a large mix of music from rock, heavy metal, and dance! but for working out – I like a strong bass to pump up to!!

Anyone you’d like to thank? My sponsors, FUSION BODYBUILDING, they have been amazing and provide unbelievable products!! Also my sponsors from PUR Nutrion, best friend and inspiration Rachel Davis, and of course my boyfriend -number 1 support system Eric Daye!

Do anything different this time than previous shows? Actually this time around, I am trying a new diet approach from previous shows! I am going to try the carb and fat loading before the show – whereas normally I coast along and don’t change anything – not even water during my last week of prep!! Thought I would try it, and see how it works for me!! Needless to say, I am extremely excited about getting carbs mid-week!! bring it on!

Where can people find more info on you?

Jodiboam.com  is in the works, but almost ready to rock!! keep checking and to see when its up and running!!
also, many videos on Youtube just by typing my name!! GO, do it!! I need more hits!! lol

Former WWE Diva: Jackie Gayda-Haas

Jackie Gayda HaasLast month, it was announced that former WWE Diva Jackie Gayda-Haas, placed 3rd out of 37 competitors in the Branch Warren Classic fitness/bodybuilding competition. Jackie has now qualified for the nationals and appears to have a promising bodybuilding career ahead of her.

On the November 26, 2005 edition of Impact!, Gayda made her debut lashing out at Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett was shocked and frightened by Gayda’s unexpected appearance and soon ordered her backstage. He was heard saying, “It’s not what you think.” After being pushed by Jarrett, Gayda slapped him and then went after his valet, Gail Kim. The following week, Gayda came out again to confront Jarrett. After pushing and slapping, the two had to be pulled apart by officials. At Turning Point, the same thing happened in the main event match, but Gayda was restrained by officials. On the December 31 show, Don West tracked down Gayda for an interview. She said her being there had nothing to do with a love affair, but rather that Jarrett had promised her a spot on the TNA Roster, but while she was stuck at home, she turned on the television to see Kim in her place. She said she had a big secret about Jarrett that TNA Management would love to hear, but did not reveal what it was.

Gayda won TNA’s Knockout of the Year 2005 on the January 14, 2006 edition of Impact!. At Final Resolution, she ran into Raven after he lost his match. She told him that they had something in common, they were both being screwed by TNA Management. On the January 28 edition of Impact!, Gayda came down to ringside during a Jarrett versus Jay Lethal match, to hand an audio tape to Kim. She then left, with a confused Kim soon following.

Jarrett then hired Alex Shelley to video tape Gayda at her home, for blackmail. Shelley complied, returning a week later with a videotape. On the February 18, 2006 edition of Impact!, she told Jarrett that he had won and that she would leave. Jarrett refused to comply and used the tape Shelley compiled of Gayda asblackmail to get her to join his stable. Jackie became the manager of Planet Jarrett. She feuded with Gail Kim in mid-2006. At Sacrifice Jackie announced that she was pregnant, so Kim kayfabe fired her. She has not appeared with TNA since and her photos have been removed from the Knockouts portion of the website. Shortly before her pictures were removed from the TNA website it was confirmed that Gayda parted ways with TNA.

In April 2009, Gayda returned to WWE for one-night only as a part of the 25 Diva battle royal at WrestleMania XXV. She had apparently retired from professional wrestling after her match.

On August 30, 2010, Mexican promotion Perros del Mal Producciones announced that Gayda, under the ring name Miss Jackie, would wrestle for the promotion on September 16, on the same card as her husband Charlie Haas. At the event Jackie and Celestial defeated Jennifer Blake and Mini Chessman in a tag team match.[10] She appeared again on February 11, 2011, on the Viva La Lucha PPV, teaming with NY Knockout Nikki to take on Christina Von Eerie and Jennifer Blake (a match that she won for her team, via crossbody into a pin).

Ellena TsatsosEllena Tsatsos was born in Melbourne, Australia on the 16th January 1984. This dynamic young lady has taken the sport of Figure (Bodybuilding) to a new level, by showing many of her peers what determination and believing in your self can truly accomplish.

In 2007 after training for merely 5 months in a gym, Ellena took the body building world by storm. In the space of a few months she competed in 4 different federations claiming all in all 12 titles, 8 first places.

Accomplishing all this is simply not enough for this Greek – Australian young lady; she has taken an active mentoring role in the Community, and is publishing her own articles every month in the Melbourne Greek and English Newspaper Neos Kosmos, sharing with all her trials, tribulations whilst encouraging and inspiring the community to take an active role in bettering themselves through healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise in a wholistic approach.

Ellena is quoted, I hope to achieve world wide acknowledgement and appreciation from the bodybuilding industry; many people are unaware as to the commitment and drive you need to have to be a competitor. Being a role model to young Australian’s during the highest ever epidemic of obesity and eating disorders is very important. I train 5 days a week, for an hour day at Dohertys Gym in Brunswick, Australia. The commitment comes first to my body and soul, learning to listen to them both, not just your mind.

Julie Bonnett: Tips & Motivation

Julie BonnettThe reason I started fitness competing is…

I decided to enter my first competition without knowing anyone else who had ever competed. Oxygen fitness magazine first piqued my interest with its contest coverage. It made sense that if I wanted a physique like the women on those pages, I should become a competitor and learn exactly how they train and diet.

The person I most wanted to be when I started was…

I admired many of the professional competitors and appreciated advice from Ava Cowan and Kary Odiatu. However, my focus was never to duplicate the physique or success of another. My training and career goals have developed year by year.

The people I owe the most to are…

Right from the beginning of my competitive career, my parents supported my new passion. They’ve attended every contest, including most of the local ones that only my ContestPrep.ca clients are in! However, I wouldn’t be who I am without my husband, Craig. We embrace each other’s dreams one hundred percent.

The supplements I can’t live without are…

Chocolate-flavoured whey protein curbs my cravings for sweets, pre-workout drinks amp me up for each training session, and FUSION’s SUB•Q gives me the extra edge I need to lean up for competitions or photo shoots.

The best thing about training is…

The energy boost I get after a good cardio or weight training session. Your body will reward you for choosing exercise as your daily stress relief.

My ultimate goal is…

To inspire men and women to live healthy, active lifestyles as I continue to excel in my professional competitive career.

Years I’ve been training…

13 years, 6 competitively.

The last new bodybuilding/training thing I learned was…

I recently travelled to Arizona with Craig, where he trained with IFBB pro David Henry. Dave and his wife, Nicki, had used the DC style of training, and I’ve never seen Craig more exhausted after a workout. Craig has since taken me through the DC calf training – I couldn’t walk properly for a week!

The day I got my pro card…

I was also told I would be shooting with Oxygen fitness magazine – my dream come true! There was so much to be thankful for; I’d worked so hard and overcome so much to realize this dream … I cried!

The one thing every competing bodybuilder should know is…

The importance of practicing stage presence. Not only do you have to be confident that you’re showcasing your physique in your best poses, but you have to condition yourself to hold tight for the entire round.

One bodybuilding secret I discovered is…

My secret to success: Keep a positive state of mind, and surround yourself with empowering people!

What I enjoy most about competing is…

The focus and anticipation of the coming competition pushes me to my limits.

The thing I hate most about stepping up onstage is…

Being desperately thirsty.

Sherrie CarnicleChildhood

Sherrie Carnicle, mother, personal trainer, fitness model and competitor born December 22, 1977 and raised in Cedar Rapids, IA.
My parents and family inspired my interest in fitness, father was a golden gloves boxer, and competitive power-lifter, mother never missed a day of exercise, every morning she did videos in our living room. Our Father actually paid us an allowance to do push ups and sit ups each night.
Growing up with one brother, Paul, who was 4 ½ years older than me, you could describe me as a tomboy. I followed him around playing football, catching insects, and riding dirt bike. I then followed in his athletic footsteps as he set records in track in middle school and high school.

I started with karate and gymnastics around the age of 6 and continued my involvement in sports such as volleyball, track, soccer, cheerleading throughout middle school and high school.
During my first season of track, as a freshman in high school, I started lifting weights and was immediately hooked.
College
I knew my passion and career path right out of high school and went to college at Western Illinois University, to pursue a BS in Exercise Science, graduating with honors. I was a fitness trainer for the student recreation center and actively participated and took on leadership roles in many student clubs.
Family-Daughter
After college I did my internship in AZ at Camelback Resort. Shortly after my internship I had my daughter Hailee, who is now 7, and moved back to IA.
Competition
I did my first figure competition in 2004, 10 months after giving birth to Hailee. I placed first in my initial show and earned a pro card in NGA. I went on to compete later in the NPC sanction where I am currently top ten ranked national competitor in figure.  While training for shows I picked up an interest in running road races and actually placed at the top in many ranging from 5k to 25k.

Ukraine’s Oliya Melnichuk: Interview by Lee Penman

Oliya Melnichuk
Although she may be a relative newcomer to the competitive arena, Oliya Melnichuk is no stranger to challenge. Her story is one of triumph over adversity, realizing her dreams despite what some would consider to be overwhelming odds.  Entering the USA as an immigrant with little grasp of the English language, Oliya had nothing but her strength of will and sheer determination to carry her through those tough early years in a strange country.
Currently making a major impact in the bikini class I thought it was time to shine the spotlight on this rising star and hear a little more about her inspirational success story…

So Oliya, although you live in Florida now, you were born in the Ukraine. What are your memories of growing up there?

“They are all happy memories!  Even though my parents got divorced when I turned 3 years old, they stayed really close friends so my sister and I never really experienced the typical effects of a divorce.  Most of my memories consist of spending time outside, doing any type of outdoor activities.  We were very active and never stayed in… plus back in the day, especially in that part of the world, video games and TV weren’t as popular as they are here, in fact, I don’t think that all of our neighbors even had TV’s!.  I’m so happy that we weren’t raised sitting in front of a TV with a Play Station in our hands… what a closed in and unhealthy way to grow up.”

Leaving your sister and father behind to move to the USA must have been tough; do you hope to bring them over here one day?

“Yes it is very tough and I miss them terribly.  My family have always been very close so being apart from them for so long is heartbreaking.  I recently saw a picture of my Dad and it took me a couple of minutes to recognize him. I can’t describe the feeling of confusion in my head, because there aren’t enough words that would be able to express the pain and sorrow. I haven’t seen my sister or my Dad since I was 10 years old…I am now 27.  Bringing them here is NOT an option,  my mom has gone back to visit, although I never have.  It’s insanely expensive so for right now that is not possible but give me 2, 3 years, when I’m rich and famous…then I will go!”

Did you experience any language difficulties when you came over here and if so how is your English now?

“My God! I didn’t speak a word of English when we moved here.  School was HELL the first year, I pretty much just smiled and nodded to EVERYTHING! It got better with time; I was watching more and more TV, which is what saved me. These days I like to believe my English is excellent – for an immigrant anyway!”

You say you ‘discovered’ New York at 16….how did that discovery come about and what attracted you most about the city?

“ I was asked to go to a rave party somewhere in the city and that is how my discovery came about!  I grew up in a small town in the Ukraine, so you can only imagine my amazement seeing all those lights and skyscrapers.  I think it’s every teenager’s dream, to live free in a big city filled with opportunities and to become whatever it is you’ve always dreamt of being.”

They say if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere. What were those early days over here like for you?

“To make a long story short I am glad I ended up moving away at such an early age and experiencing all the hardships of living alone in a big city.  Good experiences give you hope, and bad experiences teach you a lesson, make you wiser (unless you’re a slow learner).  I’ve had my share of disappointments with former friends, ex boyfriends, and just people around me who have done wrong by me, but I would never change a thing about growing up in NYC.  I think if you are street smart and have common sense you can make it anywhere.  The city can’t make you nor can it break you, unless you are easily influenced and do not stand your ground. I have built a very strong character, so attempting to break me would be amusing to watch.”

Turning to your physical pursuits, you have said that you were always thin and found it difficult gaining weight. Was that what inspired you to get into the gym initially?

“Absolutely! I was 110 pounds until I turned 23.  I was always made fun of for being a ‘string bean’, especially in school, kids were VICIOUS!  Being from a different country didn’t help the situation at all.  I struggled through my teen years and early 20’s trying to gain a lousy pound or two if I was lucky!  Once I started my consistent training in the gym, eating the right way and seeing the results, I was sold!”

So how did you evolve from gym member to personal trainer and eventually competitor?

“I seem to be very good with bossing people around (lol!), so with that being said, having so much passion for the fitness industry, an opportunity to become a personal trainer seemed like a great and wise idea.  I always had stage fright so going up there in front of hundreds of people was definitely a fear of mine.  It took a while, for those around me to convince me to do a show.  I was originally training for figure, but one of my friends recommended bikini instead, since it was much easier for me to lean out than to gain muscle.  I finally registered for a show (Lakeland Classic 2009) and ended up winning the overall!”

You have now done four shows….what have you learned along the way?

“I have learned to listen to my body when it comes to both nutrition and training.  I no longer over train, I give my muscles time to heal and grow.  I know how certain foods effect my body, what makes me bloated, what leans me out.  Every show is another stepping stone towards my goal.  Everyone wants to win, we all compete for the 1st place.  Learning something new about yourself and being able to better yourself for the next show is an accomplishment in itself.  I’m inspired by those who may lose and yet keep moving forward… those who refuse to give up and those who BELIEVE in themselves.  I am one of those people and feel blessed to be able to say that.”

You claim to not be a big fan of constructive criticism…how do you overcome that when you are in a sport now where there is always going to be some degree of criticism?

“This sport is what taught me to be able to take constructive criticism and use it to my advantage.  What you see in the mirror is very rarely what others see by looking at you.  The judges are there to guide you in the right direction, and give you pointers on the areas you need to work on.  Embrace the criticism, take it in and use it to your advantage! Being a stubborn Leo, I’ve always struggled with having to ask for advice, but with time and accumulation of wisdom I now finally realize what my boyfriend, Walter Santoni, has been preaching to me all along : ‘You won’t get an answer, if you don’t ask a question’ is so very true!”

I guess with your metabolism you don’t have to pay TOO much attention to diet….right or wrong?

“ WRONG!  I actually have to pay more attention to it than most, since missing a meal makes me drop a pound to two pounds right away.  I have to be very consistent with my meals and always have to have either a shake or some sort of food with me in case I’m stuck in the middle of nowhere with no grocery stores around. It’s a pain in the butt!  It’s like a job you don’t get paid for, but nothing beats the beautiful feeling of accomplishment when you’re in the first call out!”

What sort of training schedule do you follow and due to your metabolism do you restrict cardio at all?

“After getting all the possible feedback I could get from the judges from my last show, I have been concentrating A LOT on my ham/glute area during my training, leaving my upper body alone for a while.  I am trying to bring out my legs more and build some muscle in that area, as well as tighten my backside.  I have done more lunges in the past month than I have in my entire life!  As far as Cardio goes, I never used to do cardio before, until now.  I am eating enough where I don’t have to worry about becoming a walking stick again, so I have been spending a whole lot of time on the Stairmaster!”

What is the hardest thing for you about competing?

“You have to make sure you eat the right foods at the right time, train the areas that need work the most.  You are constantly in a battle with yourself, because you have to push your body nonstop.  You can only master this sport if your mind overcomes the urges of the body.  Even if you do not place, as long as you improve from your  last show, you are a winner. At the end of the day, the only person you are competing against is yourself and THAT is the hardest part of competing.”

What are your long term goals in and out of the sport?

“ I’ve come a long way since my first show. At this point I am working towards my Pro Card.  With that, comes the opportunity to start my own team, and hopefully at some point my own competition Bikini line. But I am climbing the ladder of success one step at a time!
“As far as my career goes, I am currently in school to become a Veterinary Tech.  I’ve  been obsessed with animals since I was a little kid.  I’ve been a member of ASPCA for years now, and have been volunteering for Humane Society as well.  Some people spend their free time shopping at the mall, I spend it cleaning doggy poo, lol.  I wouldn’t change a thing, it’s the most rewarding feeling to be able to take care of pets whose unconditional love should be an example to all of human kind.”

When can we see you on stage again?

“The Nationals on October 15 and 16! I have busted my ass training according to the advice given by the judges, so I feel very confident and excited about this upcoming show.  I have put my all into it, dieting and training, so whatever happens I have no regrets because I’ve done my best this time around!

How can people contact you?

“ I will be opening up my own website soon, as well as a Facebook fan page ( I don’t consider myself important enough to have one yet). But for now the easiest way is to email me : Oliya.m@gmail.com or tweet me @OliyaMelnichuk!”

In my own words…

I earned my MD from Yale in 1994, but unlike most of my peers, I chose not to practice medicine in the traditional sense. While most MDs treat disease for a living, I spread the gospel of good health. Between my medical education, research background, consulting experience, and involvement with the fitness industry, I’ve managed to assemble an eclectic foundation that sets me apart from other self-proclaimed health gurus.
For example, I am certainly one of very few physique models who can truthfully say that my opinions on diet, training, and supplementation are rooted in a solid understanding of biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology. By the same token, after spending nearly a decade doing investigative research in the areas of neurobiology, biomechanics, and sports medicine, I know how to interpret data. Whether I’m perusing the latest breakthrough study in the New England Journal of Medicine or scanning the health factoids in Cosmo, I can read between the lines to draw my own conclusions.

Dr. Christine Lydon

Likewise, working closely with private clients boasting a spectrum of occupations and personal fitness goals, from academy award winners and professional athletes to fire fighters and new moms, has taught me the delicate art of motivating without overwhelming, an approach that carries over to my writing. As an author, columnist, and freelance writer, I find it extremely fulfilling to know that I can reach more people in a single day than the average physician might treat in a lifetime.

A lot of people ask me what on earth led me to follow such an unorthodox career path. After all, I went to medical school to become an orthopaedic surgeon. Back then, my head was filled with romantic preconceptions about what it meant to be a doctor. According to my ingenuous notions, modern medicine was a dynamic, almost magical domain of endless possibilities, and doctors were heroic miracle workers. I truly believed that the human body, with the proper inducements, possessed infinite healing potential.

Medical school cured my fantasy.

Dr. Christine Lydon

I quickly learned that most people who suffered from serious medical conditions would never be “as good as new,” that treatable almost never meant curable, and that drug side effects could be just as devastating as the illnesses they were intended to alleviate. Moreover, I was appalled by the alarming degree to which the pharmaceutical industry shaped my medical education. By pouring billions of dollars every year into drug research, pharmaceutical companies subsidize the education of every physician who graduates from an American medical school. The upshot of this arrangement is a medical system that places inordinate emphasis on disease treatment without the slightest attention to disease prevention. And as a result, most doctors are shockingly ignorant about the most fundamental aspects of healthy living.

The hypocrisy of healthcare hit me hardest when I was a surgical resident. During my albeit brief tenure as an orthopaedic intern, I spent over one hundred hours per week within the dreary confines of County Hospital. In my profound state of sleep deprivation, things like regular exercise and healthy eating quickly fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, the only reliably palatable items dispensed by the hospital cafeteria were baked goods. Dessert became the main source of pleasure in my life.
As someone who has always reveled in the joys of the outdoors and physical activity, as someone who needs regular exercise, healthy foods, and adequate sleep to feel sane, I have never been more miserable. As the months passed, I found it increasingly impossible to reconcile the fact that my chosen profession, that of a “healer,” required me to adhere to a schedule that was destroying my own health and well being. And for what? I found myself wondering. After all, many of my patients would return to a life that had been permanently altered by their illness or injury; things would never be the same for them. My entire existence began to feel like an ironic exercise in futility.

After devoting a decade of my existence and six figures in student loans to becoming a physician, all I had to show for it was endless frustration, overwhelming exhaustion, a rapidly expanding rear end, a bleeding ulcer, and utter disenchantment toward my chosen profession. I took a step back and tried to remember what had drawn me to medicine in the first place. I realized that more than the promise of a fat paycheck, more than the prestige, more than my parents’ approval, more than anything else, I had once dreamed of being a doctor because I felt a sincere desire to make a difference in people’s lives. So, I did the only thing that seemed to make any sense at the time and I quit my residency. It was the toughest, and BEST decision I ever made. Since that fateful day in October of 1994 when I bade farewell to County General, I’ve made it my life’s work to educate people about healthy eating, efficient exercising, disease prevention, and non-pharmaceutical alternatives for increasing longevity. Many of my fundamental beliefs about good health fly in the face of the western medical establishment, contradicting the conventional wisdom embraced by physicians who have been lulled into complacence by the monumental influence of the pharmaceutical industry. An unfortunate number of American doctors are openly hostile to any therapeutic practice which does not involve a prescription pad or an operating room. The very notion of disease prevention has been systematically wiped from their collective consciousness. Even the most progressive health care providers are shockingly ignorant when it comes to the basics of healthy living. It’s not their fault– they’ve been brainwashed into thinking that they are health experts, when in actuality they are disease experts.
Obviously, I cannot single-handedly revolutionize health care. Shifting the emphasis from disease treatment to disease prevention would involve a large-scale overhaul of the entire medical establishment– something that is not likely to happen any time soon. Unfortunately, that does not change the fact that, in the real world, the only completely reliable way to “cure” disease is to stop it from happening in the first place. But don’t expect to unearth a wealth of knowledge about disease prevention at your doctor’s office.

Although medical school taught me the basics of physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry, virtually everything I now know about good nutrition and effective exercising I learned after receiving my degree. Had I completed my residency training and gone on to practice medicine like most of my peers, it’s doubtful that I would know the first thing about healthy living. If I was like most practicing physicians, I would eat a diet rich in processed foods, chemical preservatives, saturated fat, and artificial ingredients. I would consume too much coffee and alcohol and not enough fiber. I would suffer from emotional stress, lack of exercise, and lack of sleep. My body would be gearing up for a myriad of pathological processes including cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and chronic fatigue syndrome. In other words, I would be the typical unhealthy American.

Tallying all the perils of modern living can be overwhelming. Who will save you? Who will be there to tell you what to eat? How much to exercise? Which supplements to take? Even if your GP happens to be one of the enlightened few with a grasp of what healthy living entails, your doctor can’t force you to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The only person who can make your healthy life choices is YOU!

I am no longer a small town girl of a population of 500 people. I have recently made the move to the city!!! Well a city to me. I went from 500 to 12,0000. See what did I tell ya. Kinda scary at first but hey I am tuff. Adjusting to working out in public is kina weird. Until now I did all my training in the garage. But all that equipment got sold in the move and well here I am a city chick working out in a public gym talk about adjustments. As for my restaurant it is up for sale and I am working for a oilfield company.

Still all the family history is the same. I am the youngest girl of five children. I have a older sister and three brothers. So yes you guessed it life growing up was rough. It was like having four fathers following me around everywhere!!. Hey besides not allowing me to go to the parties or to my own grad without them there to chaperone and a 11:00 curfew at 18 years old what fun would life have been. (I just keep telling myself that!) In the long run I knew they did it because they loved me so all is good. I have seven dogs. One English Setter and six English Pointers. They are a whole lot of fun. Each year we head down to southern United States and trial with them  on wild birds. Generally quail. It is amazing to watch them at work! Just lost the only girl we had a couple months ago…my rottweiler. Broke my heart – she was eleven and well, I just say that Heaven has a new Angel.

Besides all that just living life as a bodybuilder and loving it. I found my true passion in this sport and I hope I never disappoint you. As long as I step foot on any stage I promise to present myself at my best. Hope to see you around.

In 2008 I was just coming probably the most depressing confusing part of my life. Struggling through school with a very sick alcoholic father watching him kill his self slowly as I was doing the same slowly to my own self, self abusing myself was the only way I knew how to cope with my emotions! Living in a nightmare that I thought it could never change! The last month I decided that I wanted to start to love myself and live life I went to the doctors. The doctor told me that my liver was about to shut down, I had no white blood cells, my hair was falling out rapidly, my skin was peeling off is chunks and my knee caps were bigger than my freaking thighs, I was under 80lbs! He said “if you don’t get help you are going to die!” I have never been so scared! I fought through it all myself because I was on a mission to become something amazing and start living a whole new healthy life style! Here I am now loving life and everyone around me!

Why I Love It:

I love it so much because it really got my life together and made me make the right choices to keep me healthy and happy! Working out is my life I wake up every morning so driven (it scares me sometimes) to give it all I got in the gym and show myself up! I hope to show people you can overcome anything if your focused and really believe in yourself!

How I Stay Motivated:

I stay motivated by just being healthy and that makes me think clear keeps me spirit high! Also thinking about how I was before…. Even I hate thinking that was me but it only made me where I am now, so strong and I feel like it made me believe I can do anything with my life now!

Kristelle Sammons
Kristelle is one of the most talked about models within the fitness industry at present!! This highly….highly motivating 26 year old hails from these here British Isles. She is a paradox! Humble and grounded yet striking and exotic. Pint-sized in stature yet powerful in physique. Quirky and playful yet fiercely focused and determined.

She owes her remarkable physique to her continuously dedicated training sessions, and owes her Amazonian Indo-Caribbean features to her Trinidadian roots. Kristelle easily lifts a few kilos and easily turns a few heads!

In debut she created ripples. The Londoner first competed in 2007 heading up North and clinching the ‘Trained Figure’ title at the National Physique Association (NPA) Yorkshire Finals. A year later she was crowned NPA British Champion.

Now she threatens to create waves in the fitness world! Her future
aspirations? To gain further recognition and notoriety as a fitness model
and to one day open a successful gym. Her blinkered focus and sheer bloody-mindedness leaves no doubt in my mind that Ms Sammons will achieve her targets and live out her aspirations.

With a name, physique, attitude and presence you are unlikely to forget
she is destined for big things! Watch this space and hold tight…cos here
comes Kristelle Sammons!
